The Journey

a new start.....

Today is Easter Sunday, for many a religous celebration, for others a day of gathering with friends and family.  But it is also a day of promise with the change of the calendar.  With the upcoming warmer weather, we look to spending more time outside, enjoying activities we haven't since last year.

I wrote a few weeks ago, about the increased number of swimmers in the early morning hours, at the pool.  I live next to a running trail and it is seeing more and more use every day.  I was very lucky, here in Southeastern PA, we did not have a great deal of snow, so I used the trail often this winter.  I was, often, the only person out there.  And while I have been pretty consistent in my training over the winter, the last few weeks, personal issues have caused my workouts to be "off track" along with my food intake.  Yet today, I'm ok with that.  Because I know how to get back on track and "start over".

You see, every day we get a chance to "start over".  In the past, when I missed a workout or ate something that wasn't the best choice for me, I would think, "well, I've blown it, again, might as well give up".  But I've learned that isn't the case.  Sometimes "life" happens, we get sick, we have to work "extra" at the job, we have a dentist appointment come up.  Sometimes we just can't stick like glue to our training plan.  And I use to beat myself up about that.  But these things happen.  And when they do, I take a second and think about my training plan.  Could I add that workout into another day this week?  Maybe put it in place of my "rest" day and take the missed workout day as a "rest" day?  There are options.  The key, for me, is what am I doing TODAY to keep me moving toward my goals.  And every day I get a chance to "start over" with my plan.  Even if I was right on track with my food and workouts the previous day, I can take the next step toward that goal.

It's about making little changes, every day.  I can't just go to the pool, swim 8 hours and become a better, albeit, tired swimmer. But I can go to the pool over the course of 2 weeks, for a total of 8 hours, and become a better swimmer.

For me, I'm learning that if I get off track, I'll be ok, because I know how to get right back on.
