The Journey

You don't have to listen....

One of my biggest concerns when I purchased Chalean Extreme was being able to hear it.  In the summer of 2007, I  lost almost 80% of my hearing in my right ear.  The left started to go not long after that.  To this date, the doctors have never been able to isolate what took my hearing.  They do feel it's connected to an abnormal auto immune marker.  My sister has Rheumatoid arthristis and my doctors feel I have some type of auto immune disease.  Mine manifested itself in my hearing loss and occassional joint and muscle pain.
And while I do wear two hearing aids, they are not 100% in regards to my being able to hearing everything.  I often miss things when people are talking to me.  I asked on the TBB message boards if anyone knew if CE was closed captioned and was told "no".   But I thought I'd give it a try anyway, I really wanted to do that workout.  My TV is about 10 years old and I knew that it would pick up if a DVD was closed captioned, it had happened in the past.  I popped the CE DVD in and waited and was so excited when the closed captioning came up!  I could hear her clearly but it made me feel better knowing that I could "read" it if I needed to.
Today, I started week 3 of Burn Circuit I.  I was a little concerned that I would get "bored" with hearing the same things over again.  But since I also do her cardio workouts, as well, as ab workouts, it's never like watching a "rerun", you know?  And, actually, it's helped me get more comfortable with the moves.  I love how Chalene really emphasizes form.  Even going so far as to talk about being careful to bend your knees picking up and putting the weights between sets.  It's those little things that some trainers miss, especially when you're "taping" for a DVD.  And anyone who has done any of Chalene's workouts knows how motivational she is!  Love that!  It's almost like she's there in the room with you, pushing you on, to do your best.  And I can really feel that she wants me to do my best.  She wants me to succeed in getting to my goal.  And how can you not want to have a trainer who says "Why not have a metabolism that burns more calories so you can eat more food?"  LOL!!!  How can you not LOVE that!
After Burn Circuit I, I decided to do her "Recharge".  It's all about stretching and it has helped my knee quite a bit.  It's a nice relaxing "workout".  I'm doing it 3x's/week.  My knee has stopped making noises since I've been stretching it.  It had been making this annoying "clicking", no pain, but I never think it's good when your body makes a strange noise.  LOL!  At least not in my joints!  I've been very fortunate to not have knee problems, considering my weight all these years.
While I was doing Burn Circuit I, during the posterior fly move, swimming crossed my mind.  Prior to this summer, I hadn't been in a pool, actually swimming in years.....really, years.  And when I lost my hearing, I pretty much figured the "triathlon" was gone, figured it was only going to be "duathlons" from now on.  That was until I mentioned I "couldn't" do a triathlon to Gale Bernhardt.  Don't tell an Olympic class coach you "can't" do their sport!   Because more than likely, they've encountered your problem before and have a solution.  And she did.  She told me to contact the race officials, let them know about my hearing difficulty.  That the only real problem is during the swim and that if they are aware of me, they will watch out for me.  And I just pop my hearing aids back in when I go into T1.  I was very grateful that I wrote to her, she gave me back that true Ironman dream.
So, I convinced a friend to help me get comfortable in the pool, where I can barely tread water and can't really hear!  LOL!!!  Yup, I'm going to do a triathlon!  Like the sign says.......

I was able to get in the pool, after my race and before the temps started to drop, about 4-5 times.  But it was enough to get me comfortable being in the water.  I'm planning on getting over to the local Y in the next month.  I was, originally, going to join in January, but I think I'd like to get going now.  My goal is to do an Olympic triathlon at the end of next summer.  I'm very comfortable with the running and biking segments, it's that swimming part I need A LOT of work on.  I'm willing to do the work, it's just a matter of setting up a training plan.
So, back to Chalean Extreme.  I'm doing the posterior fly and I'm thinking how it will help my upper body.  I have always had weak shoulders and lifting has helped me overcome that.  Chalene's workout uses "heavy weights, low reps".  You don't do more than 12 reps for each exercise in the Burn Circuit.  I like it because it prevents me from getting bored.   And like most woman, I have a weak upper body anyway.  Chalene's workouts combining lower body (like lunges) and bicep curls, in the same exercise is awesome.  I'm way into multitasking, so these workouts really work for me!  And I find I can really focus on the particular muscle group I'm working.  She mentions what you should be "working" for each exercise.  I think it will help my upper body strength considerably.
I did the same as I always do for food today.  I use her meal plan for breakfast and dinner.  In between I have 4 "snacks" and shakeology for lunch.  The current thinking is that to lose body fat you eat every 2 1/2 - 3 hours.  The reasoning behind this is to keep your body from going into "fat storage mode".  By eating at these intervals, you keep a more "steady" metabolism.  I tried doing that and maybe it's just me but I started out the day fine but the afternoon doesn't go so well.  I really wanted to do it, but I would watch the clock after lunch until I could eat again, and then just "inhale" my snack!  I think it might have just been my head but my stomach "felt" hungry.  So, I switched things around a little.  Now I have my breakfast, then a snack a 2 1/2 hours later, then lunch 2 1/2 hours after that.  Then a snack 1 1/2 hours later than another snack 2 hours after that.  That takes me to the end of my normal work day.  And while I love to lift before work, I do my runs and biking after work.  So, I end up doing those about 1 1/2 - 2 hours after my last snack.  For my body it works out perfect.  I come home, shower and by then am ready for dinner.  I rarely eat after 7, which is the latest I usually have dinner.
Right now I'm heading out for a run.  I am hooking up with a local running group tonight.  I am NOT a fast runner but hope to become one.  One of the many things that has come out of me having a more active life, are the amazing people I meet along this journey.  People who want to travel this road, even for a little while, with me.  And don't want anything in return.  How can I not want to keep moving forward when that is the direction of so many more wonderful things to come???
